On Friday, we visited with both of our state Supreme Court candidates that are up for reelection in the fall. We also visited the Ohio Republican Party where we discussed strategies for getting out the vote in November.
Justice Evelyn Stratton and Justice Maureen O'Connor are both on the ballot this fall. Both are endorsed Republicans. They will need our help in southwest Ohio. Our party will use our resources to help both candidates.
Having conservative jurists on the Ohio Supreme Court is very important. For a great majority of cases, the state supreme court has the final word on matters that are important to Ohioans. From issues of life to issues of business, the Supreme Court affects the lives of all of us.
For those reasons, our party will be active to support these candidates in every way possible.

Alex - this is really interesting and brave to engage the community this way. You asked for it, so here it goes...
Being a middle class wage earner - why should I care more about abortion and businesses that are reaping huge profits while I can barely afford to put food on the table and fill my gas tank
And isn't the abortion issue handled by the USSC, not by the states as far as being constitutional or not - so why is this a state SC issue?
Alex - I think it's brave to put up a blog to discuss issues important to all of us - well, you asked for it!
I thought abortion's constitutionality was determined by the USSC, why is this then an issue for the state court?
And, how has our court ruled on issues of the economy for regular people like me whose wages aren't keeping up with inflation? I can't afford to put food in the frig and gas in the tank --- so why do I care about a court that has ruled for businesses that are reaping the largest profits in history?
Alex,
How about feeding us something as so far as all rulings, opinions, something more than a photo of a nice familey and where they went to school at.
We wish you well.

The Canons of Judicial Ethics severely restrict how a judicial candidate campaigns and this is why there is sometimes the perception that judges run campaigns with very vague messages. Judicial candidates must be very careful to not cross those ethical boundaries. It can be frustrating to the candidates and to those who must make a good decision.
Thanks for viewing our blog.

Many issues relating to life come before the state supreme court. Things like parental notification and mandatory ultrasounds are state laws that are sometimes reviewed by the state supreme court.
You are correct in noting that the "constitutionality" of abortion is a USSC decision (Roe v. Wade was this decision). However, state supreme courts are often asked to intepret that law and others in making important life decisions.
I believe that conservative jurists are appropriate everywhere: from traffic court to the Supreme Court. Conservative judges interpret the laws passed by our elected representatives and do not become activists to mold the view of the law from their own perspective. Conservative judges respect the democratic process and allow the people to decide through--through their elected representatives--what the law should be.
Thanks for your post!
